Roger and Mary have always loved to travel – but as Roger’s condition progressed, international adventures became more difficult. For their most recent trip, a 21-day cruise around Australia, they packed a Kera Travel sit2sit hoist to see if it could help them stay independent, safe, and on the move.

Spoiler: it did. And here’s what they learned along the way.

Transfers made easier – and safer

The Kera Travel was used multiple times a day for toileting, showering, and general transfers – both in hotel rooms and in their cruise cabin. The biggest advantage? It eliminated the risk of falls and allowed them to use standard roll-in showers without needing a bulky commode.

“Some effort required, but it worked every time.”

They noted that as Roger’s window for international travel narrows, equipment like the Kera Travel hoist can be the key to making future trips possible.

Tips for accessible cruising

If you’re planning a cruise, Roger and Mary strongly recommend checking how the ship docks at each port. Some ports required passengers to use local tender boats, which weren’t wheelchair accessible – so Mary had to go ashore alone at Airlie Beach and Komodo Island.

They also suggest:

  • Booking accessible cabins with roll-in showers
  • Packing and preparing for transfers with varying seat heights
  • Practising hoist setup before you travel

Travel highlights

Cruise stops and excursions included:

  • Sydney – A ballet performance at the Opera House, ferry to Manly, and exploring The Rocks
  • Brisbane – A trip to Australia Zoo
  • Cairns – A visit to the Aquarium (they recommend packing togs for the accessible Lagoon!)
  • Darwin, Bali, Geraldton – Local culture and stunning scenery
  • Perth & Fremantle – Exploring King’s Park and the Maritime Museum (with easy access thanks to Perth’s free CAT buses)

Tip: Roger and Mary also purchased an MLAK key to access disability facilities while travelling in Australia.

What worked well:

  • Retracting anti-tip bars fit under beds
  • Smooth sit2sit transfers without needing to stand
  • Travel case suitable for air transport
  • Adjustable lever made room-to-room use easier

What to know:

  • Carers should get familiar with sit2sit technique before using the Kera Travel hoist
  • Optimal chest pad position makes a big difference
